Nothing could be simpler
Start by finding the most tender areas in your masseter and temporalis muscles. Then if you bring your teeth together you will likely feel a bulge. The most tender and developed areas are where you want to focus the rolling and leaning of the TMJAID.
For the masseter, use the larger roller, start at the cheek bone and roll down towards the jaw angle, then follow the tracks back. For the temporalis, use the small cork, roll from the hairline upwards into the fan of the muscle.
Important things to remember
- Discomfort is ok as you roll, not pain: so, if needed back off a bit
- Roll slowly over the muscle for most effectiveness
- Don’t overwork the muscles: Spend no more than 30-60 seconds over each muscle but plan to repeat 3-4x a day
- If there is a specific area that feels knotted and tight, take the small side, lean into the area with sustained vibrating pressure for about 15-30 seconds and repeat each roll session until results achieved.
- After you are done, open and close your mouth three or four times to stretch out the muscles. Hold each open position for 3 seconds.
- Remember after each session to keep the jaw slack and open with the teeth apart and lips together as you breathe. This will help reduce tension in the face and jaw.
Cleaning your TMJAID
With cork being waterproof and anti-microbial there is not much to do. Every so often wash the roller with soap and water, rinse it off and you are done.
Things to keep in mind
Though use of the TMJAID over 3-4 weeks typically brings relief, maintaining that relief will be dependent on careful assessment of what created the muscle tension in the first place. Paying attention to daytime jaw overuse behaviors and postures will be important. In addition, a few gentle jaw opening and closing movements of the jaw after each rolling session is essential to the healing process. The combination of rolling and stretching can help maintain long term relief. If there is no response after using the TMJAID for several weeks it may be appropriate to consult with your dentist or jaw specialist in your area.
